Find the agency that booked the person

For a recent South Carolina mugshot, start with the county jail or detention agency shown on booking paperwork. A local booking image and a state-prison photograph describe different records. Charleston County’s official inmate service is one local example; it does not search every arrest in South Carolina. Record the county, booking date and inmate or booking number before comparing photographs.

Use the agency’s own result whenever possible and compare the associated identifiers, not merely a similar face or name. The Charleston Sheriff explains that its detention center receives people from various arresting agencies, which can supply inaccurate information. A booking photograph is evidence of an image associated with that booking, not proof that the person was convicted of the displayed charge.

Search the Charleston example by name, date or number

Charleston’s published help allows a last-name search using at least three characters; the result includes names beginning with those characters. An optional first name can narrow it and requires at least two characters. Alternatively, enter a booking-start date in MM/DD/YYYY format, or use a known inmate number. If an end date is omitted after a start date, the documented default is the current date.

Open the matching booking rather than stopping at the results list. Keep the booking reference and search date with any saved image, and distinguish multiple bookings for the same person. If your event belongs to another county, find that county’s official detention or Sheriff service instead of treating a Charleston no-hit as a statewide result.

Know exactly what SCDC photographs cover

The South Carolina Department of Corrections search covers people currently sentenced to and incarcerated in SCDC, using information as of midnight the previous day. It excludes people released from SCDC, county-detention populations, parole or probation and other community supervision, juvenile offenders and current SCDC fugitives. A missing result therefore cannot establish that no arrest occurred.

For current-prison information SCDC also lists 1-866-727-2846. It asks that data errors or discrepancies be reported to [email protected]. Include the relevant inmate reference and explain the specific mismatch. A saved prison-search page should retain the date checked; it is not a real-time promise of present custody after the stated update point.

Request an unavailable booking image from its holder

If the official local search does not show the image you need, ask that agency’s records office whether the particular booking photograph can be supplied. Give the name, booking date, detention facility and number if known. For Charleston Sheriff records, the published FOIA route is the Public Information Office, 3691 Leeds Avenue, North Charleston, SC 29405, or [email protected].

Charleston says to ask the public Records office first because a formal FOIA request may not be necessary; if required, it must be written. Its guidance describes a response within ten days excluding weekends and public holidays, or twenty days for information older than two years. That is a response period, not a promise that every requested image will be delivered immediately. Other counties must be checked individually.

Clarify charges and release limits before ordering

A special records request can involve research, retrieval, redaction, copies and delivery costs. Charleston’s form lists $20 per photo/video/audio/data disk and $8.50 postage when requested; it may require a 25% deposit for estimated charges of $75 or more. Ask for a written estimate for the specific image and desired electronic or physical format, rather than assuming the disk charge is a universal mugshot fee.

The form also warns that records are subject to exemptions and redaction, and that public information may not be used for commercial solicitation. Do not infer unrestricted reuse just because a photograph appears online. If access is limited, ask which portion or alternative record is available. No statewide guarantee of photograph availability or uniform county copying price is established here.

Follow the charge to the court and correct the right record

For what happened after the arrest, use South Carolina Judicial Branch case-record resources to select the county public index, then locate the handling court and case. Compare the booking reference with the prosecution and obtain its judgment or dismissal when the outcome matters. A court-certified order serves a different purpose from an arrest photograph or a detention-screen printout.

Court data are maintained by the county or city where the case was heard, even when hosted on a statewide court website. Send a factual court-record question to the circuit clerk, magistrate or municipal court that holds it. Send a booking-image mismatch to the detention agency and an SCDC data discrepancy to its stated contact; fixing one source does not automatically change every reposted image.
